When asked, what is better then Presence of mind in an accident? A wag said absence of body. This is surely true but as we cannot always escape accidents and difficult situations easily, we should have, or cultivate, what is called presence of mind. (Presence of mind) means to keep cool and calm in an emergency of any kind. It is the opposite, not of inattentiveness, but a losing one’s head.

The word mind and head means here reasoning; and  who has presence of mind in danger is one who has such a control over his nerves that his reasoning is not upset  but it still directs his actions. People who, as we say lose their heads in an emergency, are so frightened by fear, anxiety or excitement that their reasoning is for the time in abeyance or absent. As such they do and say silly things in their fright and haste.

In our lives we have seen many incidents which destroy the lives of victims, because when the incident suddenly happen with the people, they are shocked, frightened or might be loosing their memory. Do not go far away, we have recent examples of earthquakes of BALOCHISTAN and KHABYER PAKHTUNKHWA. In these earthquakes incidents many persons lost their memories, some of them got heart attack, some of them shocked or in a scared condition for many days. These all situation’s happened when we do not use our mind in a cool or calm way.

It is generally happens that an officer may loses a head in a sudden shock, if so he is not fit for his post. A driver may lose his presence of mind in the traffic of a crowded street or road and may cause a serious accident. A business man when loses his head in a business crisis and quickly buy or sell shares might get loss or damage. A mother may lose her presence of mind when her child meets an accident and then she sit down and scream, and loses her little one just because of mind lost. But in all these situations if we keep our mind cool and don’t lose our presence of mind then we can handle the situation successfully.

Presence of mind is a gift of ALLAH. It is a wish no doubt. Such people are very lucky because their presence of mind amazingly in an emergency come up to save them from taking a false or dangerous step which might harm others. But it is not the case with all. It is still, possible for nervous and excitable people to cultivate presence of mind. What one needs most is to practice to control the emotions, must consciously check and maintain self control from being carried away by  feelings, such as anger, fear, anxiety, extreme sorrow or excessive joy & happiness. We must keep a tight rein on those fiery steeds, the passions. If we thus form a habit of self-restraint, we shall be all the time able to keep cool and calm in the face of danger.
